[CHARLOTTETOWN, PE] — The Murphy Group of Restaurants has recently purchased the Merchantman Pub.

The restaurant was purchased along with Gooners Bar and The Galley Take-out Café and Bakery.

The Merchantman Pub, located at 23 Queen St., in Charlottetown, has been owned and operated by Peter Hyndman for 16 years. The Merchantman has won numerous awards and has been a staple in the downtown Charlottetown dining scene for many years.

Hyndman said he’s pleased with the Murphy Group’s acquisition.

“The Murphy Group of Restaurants is a locally owned company, with over 30 years of experience in the industry and they are committed to P.E.I.. These are all great reasons to want to sell the Merchantman to (president) Kevin Murphy,” Hyndman said.

Murphy says he is looking to the future with the new business.

“With the expansion of the Queens Wharf District, which includes the new convention centre, this location has great potential for future growth.”

Murphy doesn’t plan to make any changes to the menu or staffing in the near future.

“Contrary to many rumours, there will be little change to the Merchantman Pub. This is a very successful business, all we want to do is try and enhance what has already been established at the Pub,” says Murphy.

The Murphy Group of 13 restaurants took ownership of the Merchantman on April 30.
